Mechspec Racing Workshop opens in Kyalami
1 September 2016, Barbeque Downs, Kyalami – Local Johannesburg bike team and riding group, Mechspec Racing opened their Off Road and Adventure Bike Service and Fitment Workshop in Barbeque Downs, Kyalami this month. The workshop focuses on maintenance and repair to all bike brands and also features light retail for biking essentials plus a social, community area upstairs on the mezzanine level.
The workshop features a repurposed shipping container for a wash bay that doubles as an extension to the mezzanine level and allows customers and visitors a birds’ eye view of the workshop and MOTUL fitment bays below. “We wanted a unique concept for Mechspec Racing, the workshop,” says owner, Matthew Gregory. “It is an extension of our MSR race team and riding crew so it needed to be an engaging space for customers and team mates and at the same time operate as a professional and organized workshop.”
Mechspec Racing is positioned in a light-industrial factory unit in Barbeque Downs, a hub of motorsport in the area, and is easily accessible from the highways and surrounding arterial routes. “The location was important to us as well as the contemporary style and feel of the building,” says Matthew. Mechspec Racing is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 and on the weekend for drop offs and collections. “We will be available on Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 13:00 and Sunday afternoons from 14:00 to 16:00. We are not in a traditional retail area so we can tailor our operating hours to accommodate our customers. We feel this will be a key differentiating factor for Mechspec Racing.”
Another key factor is the strategic partnership with leading lubricant brand, MOTUL. The concept store approach provides synergies between the two brands and this is evident in the MOTUL branded fitment bays in the workshop. Mechspec Racing stocks the full range of MOTUL motorcycle lubricants as well as the MOTUL MC Care range of maintenance and care products for bikes and gear.
“We have identified off road and adventure bikes as our key focus areas so have tooled up and stocked up on essentials from leading brands such as Fox, Metzeler, Dunlop and Alpinestars to meet our customer requirements. The MOTUL MC Care range will be of particular interest to the adventure bikers with products such as MOTUL Helmet Exterior & Visor Clean and MOTUL Helmet Interior Clean specially developed for cleaning helmets and visors, and the cleaning and polishing products such as MOTUL Wash & Wax, MOTUL Perfect Seat and MOTUL Perfect Leather to name a few. The new MOTUL Insect Remover also quickly and gently removes the normal traces left by insects after a nice ride, without using any water.”
Mechspec Racing is designed to be a destination, not just a workshop. The central location makes it ideal as a starting point or finishing point for adventure bike rides. The venue is available for early morning ride briefings as well as post ride refreshments once the bikes have been parked. It is also suitable for product launches or a social get together with braai facilities, big screen TV and secure parking.
“We encourage people to use our facilities and build on the riding community. We will also arrange adventure outrides and Roof Training rides and plan events in and around the workshop such as Dads & Lads Basic Maintenance, and Roof Preparation Tips and Checks. All of these will be posted to our web site and social media platforms.
